Terms of Reference

Vision: decreased incidence and impact of stroke
Goal: development and implementation of an integrated stroke strategy for Saskatchewan by 2010
Objectives
- Establish a model for an integrated provincial stroke strategy
- Establish and co-chair Expert Working Groups in each of the key component areas of an integrated stroke strategy in order to:
- Promote ‘best practice” in each component of an integrated stroke strategy i.e. health promotion, primary and secondary prevention; pre-hospital, emergency and acute care; rehabilitation and community re-integration; information and evaluation
- Advocate for the establishment of a provincial stroke registry and ongoing evaluation mechanisms and further research in the areas of stroke prevention, treatment and rehabilitation
- Recommend policies, programs and resource allocations to the provincial government and regional health authorities which support an effective stroke strategy
- Develop mechanisms to ensure the Integrated Stroke Strategy Steering Committee is fully apprised of all stroke strategy-related activities and information in Saskatchewan
- Develop a process to gain the commitment of the Saskatchewan government to an integrated provincial stroke strategy
- Develop a process to engage key stakeholders in the development and implementation of the strategy:
- stroke survivors/caregivers
- members of the Saskatchewan public
- adequate representation by, and consideration of, rural and northern Saskatchewan
- health region boards, health care providers, researchers and decision- makers
Membership
The Saskatchewan Integrated Stroke Strategy Steering Committee shall consist of members with demonstrated interest in, and commitment to, the enhancement and integration of stroke prevention and treatment for all citizens of Saskatchewan. Members of this committee will serve as champions for the development and implementation of a provincial integrated stroke strategy in Saskatchewan.

- Physician Stroke Specialist
- Physiatrist
- Emergency/Pre-Hospital
- Consumers – stroke survivor, caregiver, other community members
Reporting
The Steering Committee will report to the Board of Directors of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan on a quarterly basis.
The Steering Committee will share the process and results of its work with provincial, territorial and national stakeholders involved in the Canadian Stroke Strategy for mutual benefit.

Provided by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan
